Wat Phra Kaew in Chiang Rai is named for the "Emerald Buddha" which it contained from (perhaps)1391 to 1436. Legend says that in 1434 lightning struck the temple's octagonal chedi which broke open to reveal the statue. It apparently had a plaster covering which fell apart (after the storm and a subsequent fall?) to reveal the jade. Now a near-replica sits here, while the original is in Bangkok in a temple of the same name. The image here wears the costume of Prince Siddhartha, linking royalty and divinity. |
